500 Word Analysis on Room Visualisation Project

For this project we had to choose a book based either in the future or the past and recreate a room from an extract of the book that describes a room.  The book that I decided to base my project around is Memoires Of A Geisha. The scene that I decided to pick was the description of one of the main characters, Matsumoto; who was one of the main Geisha’s within the story. The software that we we’re encouraged to use was 3Ds MAX which was good because I was familiar with it.
My inspirations for this project were images of old style Japanese rooms, which were quite simple in design and the majority of the furniture was made out of wood. The colours of the room were quite plain, such as creams for the walls and wood for the furniture.  The lighting for the rooms were daylight, during the day as the window screens were thin so light could pierce through and during the evenings, they used candles and lamps.
When making the room, I found it quite easy to model as most the objects within were quite simple and also easy to texture as 3DS MAX had wood textures already installed within the library of the mental ray engine.
One problem when creating the room was the texturing of the mirrors within, as I had a make-up mirror as well as a full length mirror to texture. However I did not know how to create a clear mirror effect. However with some help I learned that with the mental ray engine, it already had a mirror texture installed so all I had to do was select it and apply it, which gave me a clear mirror effect.
For this project, it was important that I used a mental ray engine, compared to the normal engine that 3DS MAX uses as it enabled me to create effects like a mirrored effect and I also added some water to the scene, when the camera looks outside, so that helped as well.
Whilst working on this project I learned about the different 3DS MAX engines that are available to use, such as the mental ray engine. I also learned about lighting for a room, as the only source of lighting was from outside and I also created a beam of light, coming from outside, which gave it a good effect.
If I had more time for this project, I believe I would edit the lighting some more as well as the shadows of the objects, weren’t perfect so I would also work out how to make them smoother. However overall for this project I found it quite enjoyable and very helpful as I would like to go into environments more, so it helped me gain more skills towards the creation of rooms.

500 Word Silent Comedy Analysis

For this assignment, we had to create a silent comedy animation. For me it was a first in creating a character in 3D so it was quite a difficult task.  The basis for this project was based around Charlie Chaplin and his silent comedy.  When watching the tutorials for this assignment, the character was a male so it would be simple to assume that the majority of the students would create a male that was bold as we haven’t covered hair particles yet. However I didn’t want to create a male that was bold so I create a female with simple hair and a hat. My character was based around my inspiration of a Japanese student, so I gave her a simple Japanese sailor uniform to wear.
When creating the character we had to draw the character from a front and side view and mould the polygons into the shape of the character. This made the basic shape of the character easy to make, however it was hard to then put detail into the clothing after. Because my character was a female it meant that I had to create a bust for the character. Creating this was quite comical as the shape of them made the character look like she had breast implants; however by tweaking the shape, I was able to create a subtle bust for my character, without looking like a bust obsessed modeller.
Once I had created my 3D character I had to then give her clothing some texture. The method for doing this is by ‘unwrapping’ the skin of the character and painting it in Photoshop. However with this part I had some trouble as the unwrapping had to be done in different sections, starting with the head, however whenever the selected part was unwrapped, it would disappear off the screen. I requested help on this matter but was unsuccessful. However after search around the internet for answers, I found a plugin, which did it automatically, without making the character disappear.  Once I had painted the character I had to give it a skeleton by adding a rig to it. This was successful until I tried to animate it. When I wanted the character to walk, there was an automatic walk cycle built into the rig, but I did not know how to make it stop, so I had to make the character walk manually, meaning that the walk cycle was not as smooth as I had hoped.  However after a while the animating came fairly easy and I created my animation.
From this project I have been able to learn how to create a character and make it move with emotions. However if I had more time on this project, I think I would have put more detail in my model, such as the eyes not looking as natural as I would have liked and also making the clothing more defined as well as making the walk cycle a lot smoother, but due to the lack of help It took me longer to paint it, which left me with little time to sort animation out.  But overall this project has taught me that I would like to go into modelling but not character modelling.

500 Word Analysis Of Pirate Camp Project

For this project we had to create a pirate camp and use 3 different procedural animations within the scene. The main piece of software that we have been encouraged to work with was Autodesk Maya. The software was fairly similar to Autodesk 3DS Max but with different command codes. For this project there were several different inspirations I could use for the layout and design of the pirate camp. These were; One Piece (Japanese Animation), Pirates of the Caribbean and a game called Fable.
All of these inspirations were good however the one inspiration I chose to stick with was the Fable game as it included pirate camps but they weren’t design like your typical pirate camp. Instead of being in a location like the beach or island, they were located within woods and mountains, with all the same objects inside the camp. So by looking at Fable the game, I made decisions for my pirate camp, such as making everything out of wood and to have a wall and defences around the camp.
One of the risks that I took on for this project was using a completely new software to create objects within. This was a risk because it meant I had to learn about the new software, which would take time to do and make the creation of the camp a lot longer than if I was to create it in a more familiar software like 3DS Max.
Throughout the course of this project there wasn’t many problem until the end of the project. This was because we were unable to gain the knowledge of rendering within Maya as well as sorting out the particle systems we used within the scenes. However these challenges were overcome by the class working together and solving each other’s problems together. One example of a problem I had and was solved was with the rendering of the scene because I didn’t know where to start with the rendering and did not realise that it was better to render all the frames off as images instead of the animation as a whole.
Whilst working on this project, I learnt a whole new software which will become useful in the future. I also learnt how to create realistic looking effects like fire and snow and wind within scenes.  However even though I learnt new techniques, certain problems created a lack of time for improvement, so if I had more time for my project, I would add a sky within the scene and because the scene was based around cheery blossom trees, I would have liked to create an effect of cherry blossom petals floating through the scene.

Room Visualisation Project - Inspiration

These are some images i gathered around th einternet to help me visualise the room for hasumomo's room in, memoirs of a geisha. Image 1(Top Left) are images about old fashioned japanese rooms that geishas may get ready in. Image 2 (Top right) are items within the room which i will most likely model. Image 3 (Bottom Left) are more images of room items that will be needed in the project. Image 4 (Bottom Right) are screen captures from the movie itself, which will allow me to see real-life look at the room and comparing it to the images from Image 1.

Character Modelling So Far.....

These are some renders of my character so far. I had to change the leg stance so that it is bending it's knees for later purposes. The legs need more proportioning done to them and more detail is needed for the top.

Character Animation Project - Character Side View

This is the side view to my character for the animation project. I have added hair to the character to make it more interesting. I haven't included the arms to the side design as they it is not essential to see the side view of the arm, as it will be designed using the front and back view the majority of the time.

These are some of the models that I created for the visualisation brief. I have made a camera and an xbox controller, however the originals are else where, these are the untextured models.

Character For Animation (Shaded)

This is an image of my charatcer after I have added shading to it. I makes the character more life-like and not bold and boring.

Character For Animation

Simple design for character that I am going to try and recreate in 3D Studio Max. Detail such as shading is still needed for the design, as well as the side view and different emotional faces.
